America shouldn’t just be energy independent—we should be “agriculture independent,” too. As the largest producer of phosphate-based crop nutrients in the country, Mosaic plays an essential role in the food supply chain, ensuring farmers can feed America’s families.
What does agricultural independence mean? It’s the power to feed our families without relying on foreign nations. Global instability in phosphate-producing countries like Russia and China underscores the need for America to secure its own crop production capabilities. Today, Florida provides around half of the phosphate-based crop nutrients American farmers need.
Adam Herges, a Sustainability Agronomist Advisor at Mosaic, works with farmers to find innovative solutions to more efficiently use phosphate products to maximize crop yield.
“Food security, and nutrient stewardship go hand in hand. It’s about ensuring that Americans can always put food on their tables, no matter what is happening in the rest of the world,” said Adam. “That’s why we’re proud to have initiatives like 4R Nutrient Stewardship to help farmers get the most out of each harvest.”
Florida’s farmers rely on crop nutrients to feed a growing population, expected to reach 26 million by 2030. Nationwide, farmers will need to produce 70% more food than markets have today, but on less land — just 90% of what is currently available for agriculture. That sounds like a tough challenge, but Mosaic’s phosphate products make it possible.
Gary Reeder, a fourth-generation farmer from Manatee County, knows that without a domestic source of phosphate, America would have to rely on foreign competitors to grow crops locally.
“Phosphate is a critical mineral, and Florida is one of the few areas left in the United States that can offer our farmers high quality, productive, and economical products,” said Mr. Reeder. “Eighty-five percent of the United States’ winter vegetable crops are grown in Florida, and we couldn’t do it without domestically sourced phosphates.”
