Respect for the natural environment is essential to the sustainability of our business. We have over 100 full-time professionals dedicated to upholding some of the most rigorous environmental protection standards at the county, state and federal levels. These rigorous regulatory requirements are maintained through routine agency inspections of our operations. This amounts to an average of 260 on-site inspections annually, which is roughly one on-site inspection for every weekday in the calendar. We understand that we must be good stewards of the resources we rely upon to execute our mission to help the world grow the food it needs. In 2020, we issued bold 2025 Targets as a way to drive progress in the areas that are most significant to us and our diverse stakeholders. Reclamation
Mosaic’s phosphate business leads the industry in developing effective methods of returning mined lands to productive uses for both wildlife and people. Our reclamation team, which is comprised of dozens of ecologists, biologists, engineers and other professionals, is responsible for creating fully functioning post-mining landscapes.
Wildlife Stewardship
Every day, we work to create and protect sensitive habitats and the numerous species that call them home. Often, scrub jays, gopher tortoises, indigo snakes and burrowing owls naturally colonize on reclaimed land. Other times, they’re relocated to reclaimed habitats through approved translocation methods. We’re proud of the leadership role we’ve taken in pioneering wildlife relocation techniques, in creating prime habitats, and in providing continued financial support for wildlife rehabilitation and education.
Protective Water Management
Responsible water usage in both our mining and fertilizer manufacturing processes is a cornerstone of Mosaic’s North American operation. Through innovative recycling and reuse methods, we’ve significantly reduced overall groundwater use at our Florida-based phosphate facilities.
Cogeneration
Fertilizer production is an energy-intensive process, but Mosaic is constantly striving to reduce our energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In fact, we have a target to reduce our companywide GHG emissions by 20% per tonne of product by 2025.
A significant portion of our Phosphate segment’s electricity requirements are satisfied through internal generation of electricity in a process called cogeneration. This process of heat recovery allows several of our plants and mines to significantly reduce the amount of third-party, primarily fossil-fuel based, electricity required from utility companies.
Net Zero
At Mosaic, we know that caring for the environment is good for business… That’s why our commitment to environmental stewardship can be seen throughout our operations. From planting millions of trees through our cutting-edge land reclamation programs, to reusing or recycling approximately 95% of the water we use – to one of our most ambitious goals to date – and that’s net zero greenhouse gas emissions in Florida by 2030, and throughout our operations by 2040.
