While many of us might not think twice about where our next meal is coming from, thousands of people in the United States and Canada aren’t as lucky. September is Hunger Action Month, which was started to raise awareness around food insecurity and encourage individuals and organizations to do their part to help end hunger.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, more than 34 million people in the U.S. are food insecure, including 9 million children. That means these Americans consistently lack access to food necessary for them to live a healthy life. In our operating area, that includes 11 percent of people in Florida and 15 percent of people in Louisiana.
In Canada, the number of people who are food insecure is rising across the country. Our partners at the Regina Food Bank report that 10,000 people rely on their support every month, and 43 percent of those clients are children. Across our company, we’re dedicated to creating food security for all in our daily work.
We’re doubling down on those efforts this September. As part of Hunger Action Month, Mosaic will host Mosaic Cares Day on Sept. 19. From Florida to Louisiana and Saskatchewan, our employees will fan out across our North America operations to volunteer at local hunger relief organizations.
