The end of September marks the end of Hunger Action Month, but Mosaic’s efforts to fight food insecurity across the globe continue year-round.
According to Feeding America and the United States Department of Agriculture, 34 million people in the United States are food insecure, including 9 million children. In fact, every county in the U.S. has a food insecure population. Canada also faces challenges with hunger, with the Regina Food Bank reporting that 10,000 people rely on their support each month, with children making up 43% of their clientele.
The global population is expected to exceed 9 billion people by 2050. Mosaic is focused on helping the world grow the food it needs, while doing so in a way that allows farmers to produce higher-yield crops using less land and fewer resources.
That’s how Mosaic continues to fight food insecurity throughout the year. It’s made possible in part by being good stewards of our land including using formerly mined land for cattle grazing, crop planting and sod farms.
Mosaic is also a supporter of education and youth agriculture, including Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4H programs. These programs provide avenues for youth to learn about and practice farming techniques and related agriscience avenues like biology, chemistry and engineering. The education continues with current farmers and our 4R Nutrient Stewardship Program, which is focused on applying the right fertilizer at the right rate, at the right time and in the right place. Doing so not only results in better crop yield — growing the food we all need — but also limits any environmental impact.
Additionally, one of Mosaic’s newest ventures is Mosaic Biosciences. This global initiative remains focused on science and innovation in agriculture, allowing Mosaic to focus more on rising to the challenge of helping the world grow the food it needs.
